Every tonne of cement replaced avoids clinker emissions

Every tonne of cement replaced by WPSA avoids clinker-production emissions — the largest source of carbon in concrete.

Carbon pricing landscape

The cost of clinker is rising

EU ETS

The EU Emissions Trading System prices CO₂ from cement and clinker production, with free allocation being phased down.

EU CBAM

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism applies an equivalent carbon price to imported cement entering the EU.

UK CBAM

The UK is introducing its own carbon border mechanism covering cement, alongside the UK ETS.

Emerging schemes

Further jurisdictions are developing carbon pricing and low-carbon procurement rules for construction materials.

Carbon credits

UPSA has engaged with Verra, the global standard-setter for carbon credit verification, with the objective that credits generated through WPSA use benefit the buyers of PSA.

Responsible operation

  • Progressive rehabilitation funded throughout the life of the quarry.
  • 20 m vegetated screening buffer to the property boundary.
  • Rehabilitation and closure plan as part of the SSD application.
